The Rise of Agave Spirits in the United Kingdom: Imports, Market Dynamics and Future Potential

Agave spirits have transformed from niche curiosities into one of the most dynamic categories in the United Kingdom. Tequila and mezcal now sit alongside whisky and rum as credible premium choices for consumers who want authenticity, origin stories and distinctive craftsmanship. The last five years show steady growth in both shipments and market value, even if publicly available UK government data does not break out the exact litres of agave spirits imported. By combining trade data, on trade statistics and market research, a clear picture emerges.

Import Activity into the UK

Trade data from Volza highlights a steady rise in shipments arriving into the UK. From March 2024 to February 2025 the United Kingdom received 781 shipments of tequila from 48 exporters supplying 63 UK buyers. This is a 22 percent increase compared to the previous twelve-month period. Almost all shipments originated in Mexico, with a small number passing through the United States.

Although shipment counts do not directly equal litres, they track importer activity and provide a reliable indicator of growing market engagement. More UK buyers, more suppliers and more containers suggest rising demand throughout distribution channels.

Tequila and Mezcal Market Performance

On trade performance reinforces this trend. According to CGA, UK bars sold 186,500 nine-litre cases of tequila in 2023. In 2024 the figure adjusted slightly to 181,200 cases. Despite the small decline, tequila remains one of the most resilient categories in the UK on trade, outperforming many other spirits that experienced larger contractions. The stability of bar demand suggests a consumer base that is maturing rather than retreating.

Market value is expanding faster than volume. Grand View Research estimates that the UK tequila market reached USD 287.8 million in 2024 and is forecast to grow to USD 505.5 million by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate near 9.8 percent. This indicates strong premiumisation, with consumers shifting toward higher quality bottles rather than higher overall quantity.

Mezcal shows similar momentum. Future Market Insights projects UK mezcal sales reaching USD 31.2 million by 2025 with a compound annual growth rate of about 6.9 percent continuing through 2035. Mezcal still occupies a smaller share of the category, yet its trajectory mirrors the early takeoff phase that tequila experienced several years ago.

Agave Spirits in the European Context

Across Europe the agave spirits category accounts for 23.8 percent of global market share according to Emergen Research. The United Kingdom is one of the key European drivers of this growth. Rising cocktail culture, appreciation for origin-specific spirits and an expanding premium retail segment all support continued expansion.

Five-Year Trend Summary

Across the last five years the overall pattern is clear. Import shipments are increasing. Tequila value sales are growing. Mezcal is expanding from a smaller base. The UK is becoming one of the strongest agave markets in Europe. Even without a published HMRC table that isolates the exact litre volume of agave spirits imported each year, all available data points in the same direction.

Challenges to Watch

Growth does not eliminate risk. Agave supply cycles in Mexico can create sudden cost increases. Premium spirits are sensitive to economic slowdowns. The category relies heavily on authenticity and transparency which places pressure on producers to maintain traditional methods while scaling responsibly. Yet none of these challenges appear large enough to halt the category’s momentum.

Conclusion

The United Kingdom has become a significant destination for agave spirits. Tequila and mezcal continue to gain cultural space, commercial presence and premium positioning. Import activity is rising, consumer interest is deepening and the next five years are set to continue the upward trajectory. The agave category is no longer an experiment in the UK. It is a durable and expanding part of the spirits landscape, and its best phase may still lie ahead.
